Get 500 of the Best Free Fonts

I don't use a lot of extra fonts on my computer. For me, the standard fonts are good enough for my needs. However, a lot of my friends are font-crazy and love to have different fonts on their computers.

Fonts500 is a website that claims to have 500 of the best fonts available. The good part about this is that all of these are free for your use. An initial visit to the page displays the first 100 fonts, with links to the other 400 at the bottom of the page.

The fonts are displayed such that each font's name is written in that font itself. If you want, you can use custom text to view how the same text looks in different fonts. The fonts themselves are varied and interesting. Some of them actually tempted me to download and add to my font collection.

Each font can be downloaded in a zip file. Then, you can extract it to the Fonts directory in your Control Panel. If you want all the fonts, I suggest you use the Downthemall Firefox extension. All 500 fonts together come to only 26 Mb.

It is important to remember that too many fonts can slow your computer down. However, it's still worth checking out all the different fonts available.

Are you satisfied with the standard Windows fonts or are you always on the lookout for unique fonts to add to your collection? W

DisplayFusion 2

DisplayFusion 2 has just been released. The software can be used to manage multi-monitor systems with ease, the key areas are wallpapers and window management with a few extras thrown in. DisplayFusion 2 lets you easily set a wallpaper - either an image or solid color - for each monitor separately or one that spans across all monitors. Wallpapers can be set on timers to change after a certain amount of time has passed (pro version only) and the integrated Flickr search helps in finding new wallpapers. Images that are to large can be positioned to display the part of the image that the user wants.

Window management is all about controlling windows on multi-monitor systems. With DisplayFusion 2 users can drag maximized windows to another monitor screen, move (and maximize) windows automatically on the next screen, center and tile windows on the screen. It is even possible to maximize a window across all screens, very nice.

Most functions can be accessed by using hotkeys. The pro version offers fully customizable hotkeys. The video demonstration on the homepage gives a very good overview of the functions of DisplayFusion 2.

Install Vista without Setting It Up

This guide shows you how to install Windows Vista but leave the set up (user name and password, PC name, recommended settings, time zone, and firewall settings) to the soon to be user of that computer just like the major PC manufacturers like Dell and HP do.

This is great for when you install Vista on a computer  for a friend or family member but you want to leave the set up to them.

  • Install Windows Vista but stop at the first set up window (the user account creation window) also known as the beginning of Out of box experience (OOBE) shown below.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + F3. Your computer will restart.

  • The computer will boot up in Audit mode and logged in as Administrator. Now would be a great time to install updates, software, and set any system settings you'd like.

  • When you're ready to shutdown the computer and give it to its owner make sure System Cleanup Action is set to OOBE in the System Preparation Tool so that when the user turns the computer on for the first time he/she will start at the user account creation window or OOBE. Do not check off Generalize.

  • Change Shutdown Options to Shutdown and then click OK to shut the computer down.

  • The computer will do its thing and then shut down

When the user boots the computer up for the first time the computer will start at the OOBE section. They can finish the installation by setting it up.

Updates and Task Manager Disabled by New Windows XP Worm

The Windows functions are always under attack because disabling a vital function of the operating system automatically means an open door for the hacker, who would be able to infiltrate into the computer and conduct his malicious activities. Today, a new worm has been spotted in the wild and, according to security company Trend Micro, it affects most flavors of the operating system produced by Microsoft, including Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003.

But what's worse is that WORM_SILLYFDC.CY has a high damage potential and a high distribution potential, two elements that underline the worm's capability to reach your computer and harm the data stored on it. In case you're curios about how can you get infected, the process is pretty simple: all you need to do is to visit an infected page. However, the worm may also be dropped by another piece of malware, Trend Micro explains.

The main targets of the worm are two important Windows functions: the Automatic Windows Update and the Task Manager. Both features of the operating system are disabled, so the users would not be able to update their Windows version or to check the running processes in order to shut down the infection.

Just like many other recent worms, WORM_SILLYFDC.CY spreads itself through the clean removable drives connected to the computer. Every time a removable drive is plugged into the system, the worm copies an Autorun.inf file to execute itself once the device is connect to another PC.

In addition, "it infects files of certain types. It does this by adding an iFrame tag that contains a link to a malicious site. As of this writing, the iFrame tag may contain a malicious URL," Trend Micro explains.

As you know, an up-to-date antivirus is almost a must-have, so hurry up and apply the latest virus definitions in order to keep your computer secure. Also, you should avoid visiting malicious websites that may attempt to drop the worm on your computer.
